Public Land Survey System
The Choctaw Meridian is a principal meridian in south-central Mississippi. It was first surveyed in 1821, beginning at the Choctaw base line, lying in 31°54’40”N latitude. From this base line, the Choctaw Meridian, lying in 90°14’45”W longitude, runs northward to the southern boundary of the Chickasaw cession, lying in 34°19’40”N latitude. Ranges are run north of the Choctaw base line, and townships are run both east and west of the Choctaw Meridian. The Initial Point was re-dedicated by a group of organizations including the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Mississippi Association of Professional Surveyors in 1998.
