A measure of the distance east or west from a referenced principal meridian, in units of six-miles (the width of one survey township). Ranges resemble columns of survey townships that are numbered starting with 1 and increasing as they move away from the principal meridian. The first column of townships east of a referenced principal meridian would be range 1 East. The first column of townships west of a referenced principal meridian would be range 1 West.
